The machine shop is actively involved in the fabrication of custom components and assemblies for educational and research projects. Our staff members can advise you on the feasibility and cost associated with any project. We are familiar with machining an array of materials including polymers, stainless steels, alloys and machinable ceramics. We are here to assist you with your manufacturing questions and deliver quality components.
If you want the Machine Shop to manufacture a part for you:
Contact a full-time staff member to set up a meeting to discuss the design and feasibility of your part.
Bring drawings, materials, components or any other materials that can assist in the discussion of your project.
During the meeting, a staff member will advise you on the design, material and tooling needed for your project.
Once you provide the material and tooling, a certified machinist can begin to work on your part.
When your parts are complete, a machinist will contact you.
A PI must provide an FAU # for payment, before you pick up your parts.
If you want to use the Machine Shop to make a part for yourself:
You must have completed the undergraduate training course or a researchers training course to be able to use the shop.

After the meeting, you can use the shop during open lab hours to work on your part.

If you are making a part for a research project, you will be asked for an email approval and FAU# from your PI for payment.
Due to Covid-19 the Machine shop will not be allowing student access. If a part or project is needed for research please email me Kblackburn@ucmerced.edu and we can set up a meeting time to discuss what is needed. Thank you
